Angels, and especially demons, have a unique place in modern, popular mythology and culture. As such, they are used extensively as plot devices or as characters in books, art, TV series and of course films.

Below are three categories of movies: the first is mostly about angels, the second mostly about demons while the third section covers angels and demons doing battle against each other, or even amongst themselves.

The selected movies are reasonably new (meaning not older than 1995 unless they are really good), and generally have a decent score on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

Some are more historically and culturally accurate than others, but unfortunately, Hollywood and the movie industry in general isn’t that big on historical accuracy and takes plenty of artistic liberties.

Movies with or about Angels

1. Wings of Desire (1987)

An angel tires of his purely ethereal life of merely overseeing the human activity of Berlin’s residents, and longs for the tangible joys of physical existence when he falls in love with a mortal.

2. City of Angels (1998)

An angel on Earth, a doctor unable to believe, a patient with a secret, a love story made in Heaven.

3. What Dreams May Come (1998)

Chris Nielsen dies in an accident, and enters Heaven. But when he discovers that his beloved wife Annie has killed herself out of grief over the loss, he embarks on an afterlife adventure to reunite with her.

4. Michael (1996)

Two tabloid reporters checking out a report of the Archangel Michael living with an old woman find that it’s true. But that’s not the only surprise.

5. Faraway, So Close! (1993)

A group of angels in the German capital look longingly upon the life of humans.

6. A Life Less Ordinary (1997)

Upon being fired, a desperate guy kidnaps a daughter of his former boss. Two angels are sent to Earth to check if love is possible in this case.

7. Dogma (1999)

An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is called upon to save the existence of humanity from being negated by two renegade angels trying to exploit a loop-hole and reenter Heaven.

8. The Discovery of Heaven (2001)

God is disappointed with the human race and wants His stone tablets back. An angel is given the assignment and, with Gabriëls help, tries to manipulate several humans on earth to get his job done. But humans have a will of their own.
